In 2003 the entire waste and vent piping in the entire building was replaced due to pipe deterioration. The 153-bed nursing home was filled to capacity and all the work had to be done without removing any residents from the building. The design, method of construction, scheduling of the work to meet the nursing staff requirements, cocooning of the construction area to control construction dust, the method of plumbing design to minimize general construction costs, and a close working relationship with the building facility staff resulted in a shorter construction period and a cost-savings. The construction period was 9 months in lieu of the originally estimated 24 months and the construction cost was approximately $1,000,000 in lieu of the originally estimated cost of $4,000,000.
